Visiting Vegan Wiltshire
If you are vegan and visiting Wiltshire- here's a few recommendations of where to go and what to see which avoid the worst of Wiltshire's animal exploitation and celebrate it's natural beauty. If you have any further suggestions or feedback, any offerings would be gratefully received
Devizes
Caen Hill Flight of Locks- easy to walk to from the centre of town (10 minutes), spectacular and peaceful but before leaving town check out the Canal Museum at the Wharf. Has an exhibition that shows just what an engineering feat it was not only to construct the canal but also to restore it after it fell in to disuse. Go to the Bistro in the Little Brittox for vegan snacks/ coffee/ meal to boost your energy. Tourist info centre is in Market Square. Market is every Thursday in Market Square and most days there is something happening in the indoor market called the Shambles on Market Square but beware there is often a butchers stall. The Devizes Museum on St John Street is also worth a look.
Between Devizes and Marlborough
Silbury Hill and Kennet Long Barrow burial mound. Walk out to the burial chamber if you like feeling a little spooked. Atmospheric and stunning countryside. A ways further down the road is the Ridgeway. Walk the Ridgeway and you reallly feel like you're going back in time. It's one of the best vantage points to really appreciate the rolling hills of wiltshire
Marlborough
Applebys is reputedly veggie friendly cafe in Hughenden Yard but no-one has yet submitted a review, so relying on you to let us know what you think. Almost next door is health food shop called Wild Thymes with lots of vegan stuff (organic only). Widest shopping street in a town in UK.
Avebury
Better than Stonehenge cos you can touch the stones. National Trust run veggie restaurant (The Circle- see review from Valley Vegan in restaurants section) and a museum and manor house.
Salisbury
Lovely market town but don't know of any particularly veg friendly places...
Bradford on Avon
Beautiful Bath stone buildings in town. Take a walk along the canal- eventually you will reach The Crossed Guns Pub where you can sit on the pub terrace and watch the kingfishers fly over the weir, canal boats cross the aqueduct and trains stop at the Halt. However you won't find anything vegan friendly to eat there except chips. Courts Gardens in Holt is worth stopping off to see the unique arboretum and water gardens
Lacock
Site of lots of filming of period dramas and Harry Potter. Abbey and Cloisters. Fox Talbot Museum about the photography pioneer. Usually very, very crowded and busy.
