Proposed Badger Cull
Date: 2012-09-28
The government is proposing allowing farmers to shoot badgers in order to reduce incidence of Bovine TB. I wish this display of ignorance, cruelty and greed were shocking but in my darkest moments it seems more like business as usual. If you care about cows, badgers, science and compassion, read on.
Annually 300,000 cattle die due to mastitis, foot rot and other infections-not a surprise to most vegans and one of manys strong reasons why we don't like the dairy trade. These deaths are in addition to the multitude of bull calves that are killed as they are not commercially viable. 25,000 cows are killed due to TB by farmers who are upset that their profit base has been affected as they cannot trade in live animals with TB between farms. There is a vaccine available which would mean no cows or badgers need be slaughtered. It could be an ethical solution but is 10 times as expensive as shooting. What price compassion? Plant based diet
The message that a plant based diet is GOOD for us, the animals and the planet is getting out there!Check out the link- Mark Bittman food writer for the New York Times makes an eloquent, funny and impasssioned plea for everyone to eat less meat and more plants. Not specifically a vegan argument but persuasive enough to get some omnivores to re think their diet. Echoed by the journalist Raj Patel in the 'related link' below. Get your friends and family to look at this stuff!!! Also check out the Meat reducing article listed in the menu.
